Tiki Tuesday: Hale Pele

Today’s Tiki Tuesday highlight is taking us waaaay back to July, when we went out to Portland for Tiki Kon.

Tiki Kon is probably the busiest weekend to visit Hale Pele, with tiki enthusiast coming from all over waiting in line to get a table. By the time we were able to sneak away from the convention for a bit, a table for 2 was over a 60 minute wait! Lucky for us a lot of people weren’t showing up for their reservations, so that brought it down to a short 20.

Once we got inside we were seated in a cozy area near the bar with a bunch of other Tiki-heads! You are immediately transported to the tropical getaway that is Hale Pele. Complete with the sounds of thunderstorms and the fiery volcanic explosions!

Decor aside, what we really liked about Hale Pele was the mix of classic cocktails to contemporary ones. While we usually want to order our favorite classics, we make sure to order the bar’s signature cocktails as well. Especially because all their drinks are made with fresh juices, premium spirits, and house-made syrups; who knows when we’ll be able to try them again!

Kane ordered the Signal Fire, made with citrus, creamy coconut, fruity peach, cinnamon spice and overproof rum. I ordered a Moonlighter, made with gin, lime juice, cream of coconut, ginger syrup, and coconut water.

You know by now we are a suckers for coconut cream, so no surprise to say that we loved them both! We intended to order another round, but our eyes were bigger than our stomaches when it came down to dinner options.

Much like their cocktail menu, everything is inspired by the tropical island life. With hints of Asian and Polynesian cuisine, there was a lot to choose from. In true Portland fashion, their dishes feature fresh meats and vegetables that are all purchased locally.

From the Pu-Pu menu, we ordered the poke, lumpia, and sweet chili chicken wings. YUMMM!!

For our main course or “Cannibal Plates” as they call them, we had the kalbi short rib plate. And for desert we ordered the Haupia. This traditional Hawaiian dessert is made with coconut milk, and topped with Coco Lopez and toasted coconut. SO. DAMN. GOOD.

Would order everything again, but until then we’ll just have to drool over all the photos we took. If you’re traveling to Portland any time soon, make a reservation and share your photos with us! We’d love see you all on your Tiki adventures.
