Tiki Tuesday: Strong Water

Annnnnd Tiki Tuesday is back again! We’re making our epic return to the blog with a trip up to Orange County to visit the legendary ship wreck that is Strong Water. It’s been a really long time since we’ve visited a Tiki bar that we’ve never been to, so we got the first reservation we could to treat ourselves to a post-Thanksgiving feast.

Strong Water is nestled in Downtown Anaheim, just a short drive from the Disneyland Resort. A great alternative to Trader Sam’s if you’re craving a tropical drink, but want to avoid the Disney madness. They have indoor seating for 21+ and a decent size outdoor patio open on the weekends for all ages.

Anyone else find it hard to order from a menu when you’re hungry and everything sounds good? Our stomaches wanted to order one of everything, but thankfully the staff was very helpful with recommending some of their favorites. We ended up starting off with the Longanisa Cheese Fries and the Crispy Veggie Pancake, which we devoured before our first round of drinks came. We followed that with something green. The Golden Beet and Asian Pear salad was the perfect thing to cut through all the richness from the fried food.

For our main course we couldn’t decide between the Loco Moco Burger and the Catfish Katsu Sandwich. Our bartender, Traitor Dan came through with the recs and suggested we go for the Catfish since it was a lot lighter than the Loco Moco. A great suggestion especially since we were thinking about getting dessert (spoiler we got the Thai Tea Cheesecake).

Lucky for us, we came just in time to catch the tail end of the Fall cocktail menu. Again, everything sounded good, but of course we ordered drinks that were both pineapple and bourbon based. The Peacock & the Buffalo was a really nice blend of pineapple rum, bourbon, and spiced pear brandy, while the Southeast Spice Trade gave that same warm and cozy feeling, but with allspice dram complimenting the pineapple juice and bourbon. Both excellent choices for someone who loves a classic Tiki cocktail with a twist.

Round two came off their main menu. You know we HAD to get the the Taro Colada and the Buzzn’ Jungle Bird. The Taro Colada is giving False Idol’s Ube Bae a run for its money as one of our favorite purple drinks. Made with coconut rum, spiced rum, pineapple, lime, coconut, and taro cream. The perfect decadent cocktail without being too sweet or too strong.

The coffee infused Campari is what sold us on the Buzzn’ Jungle Bird. The combo of that mixed with Jamaican gold rum, dark rum, pineapple, lime, hemp orgeat, cane, and angostura bitters made for a really good punch of sweet and bitter. It’s no wonder it was named Best New Cocktail of 2020 by Orange Coast Mag.

We definitely recommend getting both of these, which should be no surprise since by now you all should know we can’t say no to anything with taro or coffee. Special shout out to Traitor Dan for answering all our questions and mixing up some great cocktails!

The night was still young, but we decided to call it quits and save it for next week when they drop their Holiday cocktail menu. We already have our next reservation booked so keep an eye on our Instagram to see what fun holiday drinks we treat ourselves to next.
