Tiki Tuesday: The Grass Skirt

Happy Tiki Tuesday! Today we’re finally posting the rest of our San Diego adventure with a look at the Grass Skirt . Hidden away in a Poke shop, we had to walk through a freezer door that led us in to the one of the coolest bars we’ve been to. The neon lights, the pineapple skulls, and the colorful whimsey of it all, really added a unique perspective to the modern day Tiki bar. While, we love a classic Tiki experience, it’s always refreshing to see what this new wave has to offer in terms of decor, drinks, and more focus on food options.

We were lucky to make a reservation ahead of time so we didn’t have to wait too long to be seated. Although the bar is pretty spacious, it get’s pretty crowded in the later hours of the evening.

At this point we had been at Tiki Oasis most of the day. We had a few drinks there, and a couple bites to eat, but overall we were tired, thirsty, and hungry!

When you’re in that state of mind everything on the menu is calling your name! We finally settled on the four best sounding drinks. One a Chi-Chi so we could compare to our favorite at Forbidden Island.

Here’s what we ordered:

Aloha Beaches, made with pineapple infused rum, coconut rum, lime, vanilla, demerara, and banana.
Boozin’ Susan’s world famous chi chi, made with vodka, lime, pineapple, coconut, demerara, and cinnamon.
Professor Feathers, made with jamaican rum, overproof rum, pimento dram, lime, pineapple, coconut, banana, cinnamon, and mango.
Fish out of Water, made with gin, aperol, lemon, passionfruit, blood orange, and peychaud bitters.

For food we ordered a poke bowl, tenderbelly rice bowl, okonomiyaki fries, bao buns, and a couple more appitizers to soak up all the booze.

The bar and kitchen got a little busy around the time we ordered so things were taking longer than expected, but the server came around with sample sized Chi-Chi’s for us to sip on while we waited. Needless to say, by the end of the meal we were all full, and a little more than tipsy, which is a sign of a good night!

Lucky for us San Diego is just a short 8 hour drive from the Bay Area. So whenever we’re craving a Boozin’ Susan, you can bet we’ll be on the road.
