Tiki Tuesday: Hula's Modern Tiki
/Greetings from Arizona! We’ve been tiki-ing all over Phoenix this weekend and wanted to give you the inside scoop on what they’ve got going on here.
Saturday night we made our first stop at UnderTow, a small underground tiki bar. Reservations only, but lucky for us someone canceled and we were seated within 10 minutes! If you were following a long on Instagram, we storied the whole experience.
Our second and final stop was Hula’s Modern Tiki, where we stopped to get lunch before heading back to California. The interiors reminded us of the modern Hawaiian styling they have over at The Laylow in Waikiki. Hula’s was at the top of our list, so we were glad to catch it during the day when it was less crowded.
They’ve got a menu full of signature cocktails which includes their own twist on the Mai Tai, as well as a bunch of daily specials. We came in on Mystery Monday - for $5 you get a cocktail or a shot of the bartenders choice. He made us the perfect lunchtime cocktail, not too sweet, not too strong and with a strong pineapple flavor. Let’s just say it was like Hawaiian Punch for grown ups.
For lunch we ordered the Blackened Ahi Sandwich with a side of mac salad and the Mango Chicken salad with a miso vinaigrette. Super delicious and filling!
A little too modern for your liking? Well, for those who prefer a traditional tiki experience, they have another seating area that has the tiki bar aesthetic we’re all familiar with. Dim lights, palm prints and bamboo accents. It’s even complete with it’s very own soundtrack!
Our favorite part was actually the part of the restaurant that wasn’t so obvious at first. Built in below the bar was a showcase with a vintage and collectible tiki memorabilia. If you are ever in the Phoenix area, Hula’s Modern Tiki is worth stopping by even if it’s just to take a peek to see what treasures lie beneath (the bar)!
