Tiki Tuesday: Dr. Funk
🚨New Tiki bar alert🚨
Last month Dr. Funk opened up right in the heart of downtown San José. Are we a little bitter they opened up 8 months after we moved? Yes, but also excited to have a place we can count on when we go home to visit.
On our most recent adventure to the Bay Area, we rounded up the family to celebrate Kane’s birthday.
What used to be Peggy Sue’s, a 1950s-inspired diner has been completely transformed into an eclectic, tropical getaway with artifacts from all of Dr. Funks travels. The unique twist to this Tiki bar, is that it draws inspiration from Dr. Funk himself, who was “not only a skilled doctor, but also a mixologist,” so you’ll find all sorts of chemistry goodies up in the rafters, mixed in with decor from all your favorite Tiki artists and designers.
One big plus side to Dr. Funk is all the indoor AND outdoor seating, which will come in handy for those lively summer nights. The layout was very similar to Kon-Tiki in Oakland, so no matter where you sit, you’ll be surrounded by things to look at and a great view of the bar. We were lucky enough to get a big table to seat 9 in the center of the bar. If you’re in a smaller group, they do have some really nice Tiki huts you can hide out in.
Once we were all seated we began to explore the menu. Surprised to see they had hefty rum list on top of 20 tropical cocktail offerings. It’s always tough deciding what to order, especially when all the drinks sound good and the prices are just right. We tried to get a few classics and a few that had a little something special.
Here’s what we ordered:
Siren’s Shore 💀
Kesar mango, salted coconut, almighty Smith & Cross & Amaro Montenegro
Patron & Saints 💀
Milk punch made with Jamaica’s Overproof Rum-Bar, Denizen, pandan, Madagascar vanilla, and citrus
Mai Tai 💀💀
Made the Dr. Funk way, with Appleton Estate 12 Year, Smith & Cross, from-scratch orgeat, curacao & lime
Zombie 💀💀💀
A closely guarded secret made with four rums including 151
Our top picks were Siren’s Shore and Patron & Saints. Siren’s shore was inspired by mango sticky rice, one of our favorite desserts and Patron & Saints has that fresh pandan, and you all know we can’t resist a drink with pandan.
We didn’t realize there was food on the menu, but they do serve up a variety of bar foods from coconut shrimp to burgers. Those definitely would have hit the spot considering we ended the night with the Mai Tai and Zombie. But there’s always next time, right?
San José has its fare share of specialty cocktail bars and Dr. Funk is high up on our list of places we’ll hit up every time we visit. When will that be? We don’t know just yet, but now there is one more thing to look forward to. Until then, we’ll spend our nights thinking about that Patron & Saints cocktail.
